Overview

The Follett 2500 RFID Tag Encoder with Destiny EasyScan corded scanner is a simple plug-and-play kit (no software required) that encodes single HF ISO 15693 tags within seconds. Compatible with both Windows and Mac operating systems, the RFID encoder uses input from the serial attached barcode scanner to encode RFID tags in ISO 28560 Part 2 format, the newest industry standard.

Get started

If you just received your Follett 2500 RFID Tag Encoder with Destiny EasyScan corded scanner, verify the carton contains the following items:

Destiny EasyScan corded scanner

Encoder unit

Serial cable

Power pack

Set up the Destiny EasyScan Corded Scanner

Before you begin encoding, you need to set up the scanner to work with the encoder by following the steps below.

  1. Carefully insert the serial cable’s modular connector into the bottom of the scanner until you feel it click in place. To remove the cable, insert a paper clip into the cable release hole .

  2. On the encoder unit, find the serial port labeled SCANNER. Plug in the serial cable connector. Ensure the connector is fully seated in the port. Tighten the thumbscrews on the connector.
  3. Insert the DC jack of the power pack into the unit port labeled POWER then insert the plug into a power source. When it’s plugged in, the unit beeps and all lights on the front of the unit illuminate briefly. After a few seconds, the unit beeps again and the green Ready light flashes. The number “1” appears on the display screen.
  4. To configure the scanner to work with the encoder unit, scan the barcode below. The unit will beep. You only need to perform this scan the first time you use the kit.

Use the Follett 2500 RFID Tag Encoder with Destiny EasyScan Corded Scanner

To begin encoding Follett 2500 HF RFID tags or other RFID tags in industry standard formats (ISO 28560-1, ISO 28560-2 [default], Danish data model) follow the steps below.

Note: Non-standard tags are supported. Contact Follett Technical Support for assistance with determining the proper configuration for your encoder.

  1. If you have not yet set up the barcode scanner to work with the reader unit, refer to the “Set up the Destiny EasyScan Corded Scanner” procedure in this guide.
  2. Place an RFID tag within the dotted area on top of the encoder unit. Only one tag should be on the dotted surface at a time. Make sure no additional tags are within 18 inches of the encoder.
Note: Tags that have previously been encoded can be re-encoded.

  3. Scan the barcode of the item to which you will apply the encoded RFID tag.
  4. The encoder unit beeps and displays ARMED when the tag is successfully encoded and verified. The ARMED light indicates security is turned on. If the tag is not encoded successfully and verified, the Error light illuminates. The following scenarios trigger an error:
    • If the RFID tag is not properly placed on top of the encoder unit (within the dotted area) and a barcode is scanned for encoding, the encoder beeps twice and the display shows a “0.”
    • If the encoder unit sees more than one RFID tag during encoding, the encoder beeps twice and the display shows an “E.”
    • If the Encoder unit sees one RFID tag, but it fails to write the data completely, the Encoder beeps twice and the display shows an “F.” This may occur if you remove the tag from the Encoder unit before it displays as ARMED.
  5. Once the tag is encoded successfully, it is ready for circulation.

Follett HF RFID Tag Placement Guidelines

Apply tags anywhere inside a book cover (front or back). For best results, use a randomized location to avoid direct alignment among books.

Note: Certain metallic or Mylar holographic book covers can cause electromagnetic interference and should be avoided.
