Troubleshoot Label Printing
Following is some information to help with troubleshooting barcode labels.
The first time you print barcodes, print a few samples on plain paper, and do the following:
- Ensure your scanner can read the barcodes. The quality of the printout varies from printer to printer; some older printers cannot produce scanner-readable barcodes.
- Make sure the barcode is centered. Scanners require some white space at either end of the black lines. If it isn't centered, adjust the offsets and try again. When you print, Destiny saves the offset settings you used so you don' t have to set them again.

Avery 8462 mailing labels* | 2 × 7 | 1 1/3" × 4" |
Avery 8463 mailing labels** | 2 × 5 | 2" × 4" |
*This setting also works for Avery product numbers 15162, 18162, 18662, 5162, 5262, 5522, 5962, 8162, and 8252.
**This setting also works for Avery product numbers 15163, 18163, 5163, 5263, 5523, 5963, 5978, 8163, 8253, and 8763.
Note: Stock from other vendors may also work. Print a test page on plain paper, and adjust the offsets as needed. |
You can only get these labels from destinyexpress.com.
To start printing on a label other than the first one, enter the label number you want to use in the Start on label field.
Destiny counts labels from left to right, then top to bottom.
Example: To start printing on the second label of the third row of a 3 × 10 sheet, enter 8.
|
Important: Before changing the printer offsets, make sure your Adobe Reader page sizing is set to Actual size, and any scaling is disabled. |
Use the Printer offsets to fine-tune printing alignment on the labels. The first time you select a label stock, print a few tests on plain paper to ensure the printing is aligned correctly.
Note: Because printers vary, there is no absolute value for the printer offsets that always works for any given label stock. It is usually necessary to print a few test pages on plain paper to gauge the results, adjusting the offsets as needed. |
If the entire page needs to be shifted left or right, use the Horizontal Printer offset
.
If the entire page needs to be shifted up or down, use the Vertical Printer offset.
Notes:
|
Destiny saves the offset settings you used so you don't have to set them again.
Locate your stock in the following tables, and enter a number within the allowable range.
For the Horizontal setting:
Item # | Minimum setting | Maximum setting |
---|---|---|
Avery 5160 | -10 | 10 |
Sagebrush 0370-00000001 | -10 | 10 |
University 9-62450-16 | -23 | 22 |
For the Vertical setting:
Item # | Minimum setting | Maximum setting |
---|---|---|
Avery 5160 | -36 | 36 |
Sagebrush 0370-00000001 | -49 | 49 |
University 9-62450-16 | -36 | 36 |
Note: Any offsets you define for barcode labels are in addition to the unprintable area defined in your printer's properties. |
If the alignment of the printing becomes progressively worse as it proceeds down the page, the report has been scaled down (or shrunk) before it reached the printer.
Note: In Windows, Adobe Reader is set to scale by default. |
You need to disable the page handling options on the Print pop-up of Adobe Reader. To do so:
- In Adobe Reader, open the label report.
- Select Menu > Print. The Print pop-up appears.
- Set Page Sizing & Handling to Size, and select Actual Size.
- Deselect the Choose paper source by PDF page size checkbox.
- Click Print.
After you have configured the Adobe Reader settings, it might be necessary to refine the alignment further. Printer offsets let you do this.
If you are printing patron barcodes formatted to 'Use at circulation desk' and including the Circulation command barcodes, or you are printing a Class Barcodes list, you need to make changes in Adobe Reader's Print pop-up.
Note: In Windows, Adobe Reader is set to scale by default. |
To enable scaling on the Print pop-up of Adobe Reader:
- In Adobe Reader, open the label report.
- Select Menu > Print. The Print pop-up appears.
- Set Page Sizing & Handling to Size, and select Shrink oversized pages.
- Deselect the Choose paper source by PDF page size checkbox.
- Click Print.
